A Letter to a Psychic

psychicsignA few days ago I received an email from “Belle”, who claims to be a psychic. This email was in regards to my The Psychic Skeptic article.

In this particular investigation I infiltrated Absolutely Psychic, a psychic telephone service, and after passing their application process I was offered a job as a psychic.

These blow jobs have harassed and threatened me for publishing the article and mentioning their name, but I have the smoking gun: the contract they offered to me.

For the past seven years, Belle has worked as a ‘psychic’ phone operator for Absolutely (Not) Psychic (tee hee!). She contacted me, ostensibly in support of my call to expose Unscrupulous Psychics, but subtly, in defence of Absolutely (Not) Psychic.

As I was composing a response to Belle I thought, why not post it to my blog? Her email was intended for public consumption anyway. So, without futher ado, here is Belle’s email (unabridged), and my reply…

Hi Karen

I commend you for this website. Indeed there are many psychic networks that are questionable.   I know because I have worked for PRN, Psychic Friends Network and other networks as well such as Psychic chat  and psychic source. Psychic chat   owns a sex club and psychic source has another hot line that markets sexual hookups.    But I think you should cut some slack to Absolutely Psychic because they are no where near the sleeze bags in the market.  APN is 1 thing and 1 thing only:  TESTED PSYCHICS.   Now, in my humble and respectful opinion, being offered a contract is much different than being able to maintain it.  Calls are monitored and client feedback factors into maintaining the position.  This is the equivalent of marriage.   Walking down the aisle doesn’t guarantee you a successful marriage.  But a person of your great merits knows that and I don’t need to elaborate in any further because you weren’t contracted by them.

Freedom of speech is a great liberty but the written word doesn’t always portray the entire or accurate story.  For this reason, I will extend my liberty in free speech as I have worked for Absolutely Psychic Network (APN) for 7 years and have found it to be EXCELLENT.

As for the 2nd person who alleges to have worked for them, I can only say that if she  researched the market she would notice that Absolutely Psychic Network/Absolutelypsychic.com (APN)  offers the highest pay scale.  They have given me a raise every year and gift card for such long years of service.   Independent contractor work liberates one to pursue other career paths simultaneously.   If she doesn’t have other venues of expression, then sure frustration is possible.  But I believe that the universe may be trying to say something to that person.  I’m 51 years old and have been around the block longer for quite some time.

Namaste
Belle

Dear Belle,

Thank you for your email.

Owning a phone sex hotline in conjunction with a psychic hotline isn’t what makes a psychic hotline questionable. It’s that the psychic hotline company and operators think they’re “psychic” that’s questionable.

The bottom line is, I was offered a contract by Absolutely Psychic, but I am not psychic.

As you say, Absolutely Psychic contract “TESTED PSYCHICS” only, and by passing their tests and being offered a contract, I am one of those.  By their own admission, I am one of those ‘true psychics’, the “1%” to whom they offer contracts. But I am not a psychic.

As easily as I passed the company’s tests, without being psychic, I could have maintained the ‘marriage’ of the contract.

It’s exactly what you do, but you call the psychology, the advice, the comfort, the guesswork, the friendliness, the speculation, the amateur counseling, the unqualified therapy, and ‘being around the block’ by another word… “psychic”.

If we consider the paranormal definition of psychic, no “psychic” has ever demonstrated that they are psychic.

In your email, you’ve judged the worth of the company by its treatment of its staff, the pay, and the perks, rather than the validity of the very trade; or in this case, the invalidity of the trade.

With respect,

Karen.

  1. Wow! So many fallacies in that email! The two that jump out at me are Poisoning the Well (by associating the other psychic hotlines with the sex lines) and the False Analogy with the marriage comparison. I think I’ll have to do a post on this email.

But before I do, I’ll turn the marriage False Analogy back on her by extending it. Woman manage to stay married to men who they fake it with, and the bloke never realizes (I’ve been told…). So… QED.

  4. [...] The Skepbitch’s Letter to a Psychic – She responds to a “psychic’s” response to a past article she wrote discussing how she infiltrated psychic telephone service, “Absolutely Psychic” and after passing their application process was offered a contract and a job with them. . .despite the little fact that she isn’t psychic. 6. Great Stuff Karen,

Keep it up.. I know the battle is relentless but it should not be made any easier for these charlatans. The UK passed a law this year that prohibits them claiming psychic powers. They now have to advertise that it is only entertainment.

  7. Yes, entertainment – But the potential long lasting benefits one could receive from a session is undeniable. For some, it is a life changing experience.

  9. Um. If the Absolutely Psychic psychics are really psychic, then shouldn’t they have known that you are not psychic? Or are you really psychic and they know it and you don’t! But then, if so, shouldn’t you know it too, due to your psychic abilities?

    Now I’m confused.

  10. interesting post yet again. somewhat related to the topic of your post, I was doing my own research into “physic” things and one a ouija board I came up with this seemingly bizarre message that for some reason makes sense to me:
